Home flood reporting
Has your home been affected by a weather-related flood? If so, you're not alone as in the last year in Shepton, some 30 homes had this unfortunate experience.
However, we know about most of these bad experiences via third-parties rather than directly from affected residents, which means that the information may be inaccurate. The only reliable source of information is from the affected householder themselves and there may be reluctance to share the information for fear of negative consequences, such as an increase in insurance costs or negative neighbour or friend reaction.
To provide appropriate and targeted support to affected homes, the Town Council has set up a Flood Group of local volunteers and, through them, this flooding website that carries information on what we know about flooding in the town, plans for reducing its impact and which, crucially, allows affected residents to record the details of what has happened to them. Together, these provide the basis for evidence-based decision-making to reduce the impact of flooding in the town.
So, if you have had the misfortune to suffer a weather-related flood and live in Shepton Mallet, then register with this website and record the details in complete confidence that they will not be shared with outside bodies or people by clicking here.
Want to chat about this? Send your telephone number and a convenient time for us to call by clicking here and we will ring you back to answer your questions.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.
Maintainance of Water Channels
Highways - roads and footpaths - use channels and drains to take away common flows of rain water and it is thus important, especially in times of excessive rainfall, that they are kept working as they should, and the vegetation and other debris that can collect in them is removed.
The responsibility for this rests with Somerset Council. If you see a blocked channel or grid not working, report it.
Anyone can report a blockage by clicking here.

This website is being developed to help people protect themselves and their properties from flood damage. Click here to view our Flood Plan.
This spring has been the wettest on record and with global warming the amount of rain falling is set to increase, potentially making flooding worse.
The objectives for this site are to:
- Maintain a local record of areas and severity of flooding. Your help is needed.
- Provide a list of ways householders can protect themselves either by accessing grants to install more permanent flood prevention methods or provide information about local help, sandbags, etc.
- Develop an AI based early warning system of potential flood risks based on predicted and actual rainfall and upstream water levels. You can register on this site to receive updates or flood warnings.
This site is managed by the Shepton Mallet Town Council Flooding Group.
