Shepton Mallet Flood Plan - Version: 1.0 (Approved by Town Council 29 Oct 2024)
The Shepton Mallet Flood Plan has been produced by the Shepton Flood Group. This Group was setup with support from the Town Council following the flood events of January 4th and February 17th 2024 with the objectives of preparing the town to cope with the threat of further flooding and act as a focal point for assistance and support during future flooding events in the town.
This Plan is best viewed on the Web at https://www.floods.org.uk/floodplan/ where the links can be used to drill down to the supporting information.
The Plan consists of 6 sections:
- Introduction- Background introduction
- Identify - Identification and recording of sites likely to flood or that have experienced floods in the past. Including regularly checking, and reporting, to the relevant authorities, faulty elements of infrastructure, and badly planned historical constructions. The website enables details of individual flood events at each of these sites to be logged.
- Notify - Affected residents can register their details on the website and then receive automatic flood alerts based on Met Office warnings, upstream river level and rainfall monitors. All personal data will be held in compliance with GDPR policies and only visible to the Shepton Mallet Town Council Flooding Group and Flood Wardens. The Shepton Mallet Data Protection Officer monitor internal compliance
- Assistance - A register of Flood Wardens and Rest Centre(s) able to provide local support in the event of serious flooding. Details of storage facilities around the town holding appropriate equipment for use in the case of a flood event
- Reduce - Identify and promote ways of reducing the severity of flooding through the use of diversion channels, upstream attenuation ponds and creation of natural wet areas that can hold flood water in times of extreme rainfall.
- Mitigate - Reduce the risk of property flooding, both collectively and in individual properties
